Breaking Free from Fad Diets: A Christian Womanโ€™s Guide to Food Freedom

Let me paint you a picture.

You’re sitting at dinner with friends. Maybe it’s been a long day—work, kids, laundry, trying to remember if you drank water (oops ๐Ÿ˜…). You glance at the menu, already doing mental math:

“Can I have that?”
“Did I already eat too many carbs today?”
“Do I need to ‘be good’ tomorrow if I eat this?”

Meanwhile… someone across the table says, “I wish I could order that, but I’m on keto.”

And just like that, the spiral begins.

Friend, if you’ve ever felt trapped in that cycle—constantly thinking about food, second-guessing your choices, chasing the next thing that will finally “fix” your body—this post is for you.

Because today, we’re breaking up with fad diets. For good.

Why Fad Diets Feel So Darn Tempting (Even When We Know Better)

Let’s just say it out loud: fad diets are really good at marketing themselves.

They promise:

  • Quick results
  • A smaller body
  • More confidence
  • A “better” version of you

And in a world that thrives on instant gratification… that’s hard to ignore.

Lose 10 pounds in 10 days?
Sign me up.
(Except… not really.)

Here’s the truth no one wants to admit:

Fad diets work… until they don’t.

You might lose weight. You might feel in control for a little while. You might even think, “This is it. I finally figured it out.”

But then life happens.

You eat the bread.
You skip the workout.
You go on vacation.
You get tired of saying no.

And suddenly, the weight comes back. Sometimes more than before.

Cue the shame spiral.

The Real Problem With Fad Diets (That No One Talks About)

Let’s get real for a second.

The issue isn’t that you “lack discipline.”
The issue isn’t that you “did it wrong.”

The issue is that fad diets were never designed to be sustainable.

They rely on:

  • Restriction
  • Rigid rules
  • All-or-nothing thinking
  • Short-term results over long-term health

And your body is smarter than that.

When you under-eat or restrict, your body goes into survival mode.
It starts conserving energy.
Holding onto fat.
Messing with your hormones.
Spiking stress (hello, cortisol ๐Ÿ‘‹).

So when you do start eating normally again?

Your body is like:
“OH THANK GOODNESS, FOOD IS BACK. LET’S STORE EVERYTHING.”

And just like that… you’re back where you started.

Or worse.

“But It Worked Before…” — The Lie That Keeps You Stuck

This one hits deep.

Because I hear it all the time:

“But keto worked for me before.”
“I lost weight on Weight Watchers.”
“I just need to get back on track.”

Friend… let me lovingly say this:

If you have to keep going back to it… it didn’t actually work.

I know that might sting a little. (Okay, maybe a lot.)

But think about it:

If something truly worked, wouldn’t it last?

Wouldn’t it feel sustainable?
Wouldn’t it fit into your real, everyday life?

Instead, you’re stuck in this exhausting cycle:
Diet → Results → Burnout → Regain → Repeat

That’s not success.
That’s survival.

How Fad Diets Are Affecting More Than Just Your Body

Let’s zoom out for a second.

Because this isn’t just about food.
Or weight.
Or carbs vs. no carbs.

This is about your mental, emotional, and spiritual health too.

1. It Creates Obsession

How much time are you spending thinking about:

  • What you should eat

  • What you shouldn’t eat

  • When you’re allowed to eat

  • How to “fix” what you ate

Hours a day? Be honest. That’s not freedom.

2. It Fuels Comparison

Scrolling Instagram like:

  • “She looks amazing—what is she doing?”
  • “Maybe I should try that diet too…”

And suddenly, your worth feels tied to your body.

Oy vey.

3. It Disconnects You From Your Body

Instead of listening to your hunger, fullness, and energy…

You’re following:

  • Rules
  • Plans
  • Apps
  • External voices

You stop trusting yourself.

4. It Becomes a Spiritual Struggle

Okay, this is where we go deeper.

Because this isn’t just about food behavior—it’s about where you’re placing your trust.

When you’re constantly chasing diets, you’re essentially saying:

“I trust this plan more than I trust my body… and more than I trust God.”

Whew. That’s a hard truth.

But also, a freeing one.

The Missing Piece: Trusting God With Your Body

Let’s talk about something we don’t hear enough in the health space:

Food freedom is a faith journey.

Because at the root of this struggle is often a lack of trust:

  • Trust in your body
  • Trust in yourself
  • Trust in God

Maybe your body feels like it’s “failed” you.
Maybe you’ve walked through health struggles, trauma, or body image pain.

So what do we do?

We hand over control to diets.
To influencers.
To anyone who promises a solution.

But true healing starts when you shift that trust back where it belongs.

What Scripture Reminds Us

In James 1, we’re told:

If we ask for wisdom in faith, God gives it generously.

Not conditionally.
Not reluctantly.
Not after you lose 10 pounds.

Freely.

But here’s the key:

We have to actually ask—with intention.

Not just quick, distracted prayers while scrolling Instagram.
Not just “God, help me” in passing.

But real, surrendered, present moments with Him.

A Better Way: Breaking Free From Fad Diets (For Real This Time)

Alright, let’s get practical.

Because I know you’re thinking:

“Okay Brittany… but what do I actually DO?”

I got you ๐Ÿ‘‡

Step 1: Identify Your Food Rules

Grab a notebook. (Yes, really.) ๐Ÿ“”

Start noticing the thoughts running through your head:

  • “I shouldn’t eat carbs at night”
  • “I have to earn my food”
  • “I can’t eat that unless I worked out”

Write them down.

No judgment. Just awareness.

Step 2: Notice the Mental Load

For 24–48 hours, ask yourself:

How much of my day is spent thinking about food or my body?

Be honest.

Because awareness is the first step toward freedom.

Step 3: Rebuild Body Trust (Gently)

Instead of following rigid rules, begin asking:

  • Am I hungry?
  • What sounds satisfying?
  • How does this food make me feel?

This isn’t about perfection.

It’s about relearning how to listen.

Step 4: Invite God Into the Process

This is the game-changer.

Set aside intentional time—yes, like an actual appointment.

We call these “health appointments with the Lord.”

Sit with Him.
Pray.
Surrender your body, your fears, your struggles.

Not rushed.
Not distracted.
Fully present.

Because transformation doesn’t happen in chaos.
It happens in connection.

Step 5: Focus on Sustainable Habits (Even When They Feel “Boring”)

Here’s the part no one puts on Instagram:

Healthy habits aren’t flashy.

They don’t promise:

  • 10 pounds in 10 days
  • Overnight transformations
  • Quick fixes

They look like:

  • Eating consistently
  • Including all food groups
  • Moving your body in ways that feel good
  • Getting enough rest

And yes, it can feel slow.

But six months from now... that’s where the real transformation happens.

Why This Path Feels Harder (But Is Actually Better)

Let’s be honest.

This approach doesn’t feel as exciting.

It doesn’t feel “sexy.”

You don’t get instant results.

And sometimes you wonder: “Is this even working?”

But friend…

This is the work that actually lasts.

This is how you:

  • Break free from obsession
  • Heal your relationship with food
  • Experience true body peace
  • Walk in freedom with Christ

You’re Not Meant to Live in This Cycle

If you’ve been stuck in the diet cycle for years…

Hopping from plan to plan…
Feeling frustrated…
Blaming yourself…

Hear this: You are not the problem. The system is.

And you are allowed to step out of it.
