Ever found yourself hovering in front of the pantry at 9:30 p.m. asking: “Am I actually hungry, or just bored? Emotional? Broken?”
If you’ve ever questioned your body’s hunger cues—or even thought, “If I listened to my hunger, I’d totally lose control and eat ALL the things”—we get that around here.
For Christian women navigating a disordered or anxious relationship with food, this kind of confusion isn’t just common... it’s practically expected in a culture that glorifies diets and demonizes carbs.
But here’s the truth bomb I want to lovingly drop in your lap today:
Your hunger cues are not broken.
Your body is not the enemy.
You can learn to trust your God-designed hunger again.
So, let’s talk about it. In this post (based on a recent episode of the Faith-Filled Food Freedom podcast), we’re going to unpack:
👉 Spoiler alert: Yes, your story is messy, but Jesus isn’t scared of messy.
Let me set the stage with a little story that’s a whole lot like what it feels like to trust your hunger after years of restriction.
So, we decided to try grocery delivery (praise be 🙌 for modern convenience, right?)... and long story short, the GPS didn’t recognize our address correctly. Not once, but multiple times. One poor guy even delivered groceries to an open field. Yep. Middle of nowhere. Like, not a single human in sight.
The system was clearly trying—but it was glitching. And I hear women describe their hunger in the exact same way:
“I feel hungry all the time… or never.”
“I don’t trust my hunger cues anymore.”
“If I listen to my body, I’ll binge or feel sick.”
Sound familiar?
If so, you’ve probably spent years learning to distrust your body. Whether it was diets, “wellness” programs, or body shame passed down through generations, you’ve been taught that hunger is a problem to be managed… not a signal to be honored.
But let me tell you something bold and beautiful, friend:
Your body was created with hunger cues on purpose.
God didn’t mess up when He made you.
Let’s walk through three big lies that might be hijacking your food freedom—and the biblical truth that can help you walk in peace and confidence.
Oof. This one hits hard.
If you’ve ever felt like your food issues are too big for God—or like your past failures with diets or binge eating disqualify you from healing—please pause and read this slowly:
You are never too far gone for God’s mercy.
Lamentations 3 reminds us:
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning…” (Lamentations 3:22-23)
Friend, that means yesterday’s mistakes don’t define you.
God isn’t holding your last binge, your secret food stash, or your years of restriction against you. He’s not waiting for you to “get it together.” He’s inviting you to come to Him right where you are.
And let me just say… as a Registered Dietitian who’s walked hundreds of women through healing their relationship with food: if change is possible for them—it is absolutely possible for you too.
Ever seen the movie, He’s Just Not That Into You?
(No shame—sometimes rom-coms preach the gospel better than we think.)
There’s this scene where the character Gigi finally realizes… she’s the exception. But not in the way she expected.
When it comes to healing your relationship with food, this lie often sounds like:
But here’s what Scripture says:
“For God shows no partiality.” (Romans 2:11)
Translation? God doesn’t play favorites.
There’s no asterisk next to His promises that says, “Except for women who’ve dieted since high school” or “Unless you’ve binge eaten cereal out of the box at midnight.”
If food freedom is possible for one, it’s possible for you, too.
Let’s be honest. This is the big one.
This lie tends to sound like:
Here’s the thing though...
Honoring your hunger isn’t weakness. It’s wisdom.
God gave you hunger signals on purpose. They are built-in biological guidance systems. Yes, diet culture (and disordered eating) can hijack those cues. But they can be restored.
Now, if you’re like, “But Brittany… I’ve lost all hunger signals,” I see you.
Sometimes recovery starts with rebuilding the trust before you can “feel” the hunger clearly again. And that’s okay. Healing takes time, intention, and sometimes support.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;” (Proverbs 3:5)
We want to lean on control and calorie counts. God wants us to lean on Him.
Because food freedom isn’t about letting yourself go—it’s about letting go of fear and learning to trust the One who created your body to begin with.
Here’s what I want you to hold onto as you reflect on these lies:
🟡 You are not too far gone.
🟡 You are not the exception.
🟡 And hunger is not your enemy—it’s a gift from a good and faithful God.
