Ever had that "I'm going to be so good on vacation" moment... only to find yourself face-first in the mini donut box by Day Two? 😬 Or maybe you've felt that gnawing fear that if you don't track, you'll spiral out of control and come back feeling physically and mentally blah?
Girl, I've been there. 🙋
And as your faith-filled, food-freedom dietitian, I’m here to tell you: You can enjoy your vacation without tracking, obsessing, or feeling guilty—and still come back at peace with your body, your mind, and Jesus.
Ready for your anti-diet guide to guilt-free vacation eating? Let’s go. 🧳✨
Let me take you back to one of my "firsts"—my first trip trying to not track anything. We were at the beach, and I promised myself I'd "just eat normally." Cue me overthinking every meal, stressing about getting it "right," restricting here, overdoing it there, and sneaking snacks in secret while everyone else was playing beach volleyball. 😳
I felt like I couldn’t just relax and be present with my husband because the food noise in my head was LOUD.
If you've ever gone into vacation worried about losing all your "progress" or coming back with that #StartAgainMonday guilt, let’s unpack how you can truly enjoy vacation with freedom and intention.
And hey—if weekends throw you off track too, The Joy-Filled Eater LIVE coaching program is exactly where you’ll learn to enjoy food without fear, listen to your body, and take your thoughts captive before they spiral into guilt. Join us here if you’re ready to finally feel free around food—even on vacation.
Going on vacation without trusting yourself around food is like boarding a plane and fearing it’ll crash just because you’re not the pilot.
Your vacation may look different than your normal routine, but it doesn't mean you're going to lose all control. That fear? It’s rooted in past dieting experiences, not your present reality.
When you expect chaos, your brain stays in fight-or-flight, making calm, confident food choices way harder. Trust takes practice, and vacation is a perfect time to gently build that muscle.
Skipping meals because you’re “too busy” or “waiting for the big dinner” is like skipping sunscreen and wondering why you got burned. 🌞
Regular nourishment and hydration help you stay attuned to your body, not to avoid hunger, but to honor it when it shows up. Consistency reduces anxiety around meals, supports your energy, and prevents that pendulum swing between restriction and overeating.
Keep snacks on hand. Drink water throughout the day. Not to “trick” your hunger away but to care for your body.
You know how you pause to watch a sunset on vacation, soaking in the colors and the quiet?
Meals can be like that too. Slowing down, enjoying your food, and expressing gratitude supports satisfaction and helps you recognize fullness cues better than distracted eating (scrolling Instagram while downing fries, anyone?).
You don’t need to force mindfulness at every meal, but small moments of presence add up.
Vacations often throw your schedule off, but some rhythms—like brushing your teeth—don’t need to be rigid to be helpful.
Aim for three meals a day and 1–3 snacks to support appetite, energy, and digestion without obsessiveness. Your body will appreciate the gentle rhythm, even if vacation days look different.
Imagine you’re at a souvenir shop, choosing between something you love and something that “makes sense.” Which one will you actually cherish?
Same with food: choose what you want and like, not just what you think you “should” eat.
Craving sweet potato fries? Great. Order them, then consider adding a protein or veggie side to help with satisfaction and balance without rigid rules.
Restricting earlier in the day to “save up” for a big meal later is like skipping gas before a road trip—you’re going to stall out. 🚗
Restricting only sets you up for overeating later and fuels the lie that you “can’t control yourself.” Nourishing your body consistently shows your body it’s safe, supported, and can trust you.
Would you need a step counter to tell you when you’re tired? Nope—your body tells you.
You don’t need a calorie or macro app to tell you when you’ve had enough to eat. Your body is trustworthy with hunger and fullness cues. If you’re still rebuilding that trust, know it’s a process you can grow in with practice.
Pssst…this is exactly what we work on inside The Joy-Filled Eater LIVE.
Before a meal, ask: “How do I want to feel an hour from now?” Energized, satisfied, grateful?
This question empowers you to make choices from a place of self-care instead of restriction or fear.
Vacation movement should feel like dancing with your kids on the beach, not dragging yourself through a hotel gym out of guilt.
Move your body because you want to and it helps you feel good, not because you “have to” to burn off last night’s ice cream.
Don’t come home from vacation and trade your leisure time for punishment trying to “make up” for what you ate.
Grace > grind.
Jesus isn’t keeping a calorie tally while you’re on vacation. Learn from how your choices made you feel, but let go of the shame.
Freedom doesn’t mean ignoring your body; it means honoring it without obsessing over it.
You can enjoy your vacation, honor your hunger and fullness, and return home at peace—with your body, your mind, and with God.
And if you’re tired of the cycle of guilt, restriction, and stress around food, it’s time to step into lasting food freedom with Jesus at the center.
